Student Achievement Center

The Student Achievement Center provides IIHEM students with the advising and tutoring services that they may need for their academic success.
The mission of Student Advisory Services is to help students to adapt to the conditions of the IIHEM university environment, and in particular to:
  • understand the philosophy and the rules governing the educational system,
  • develop the attitude, confidence, sense of responsibility and initiative that are necessary for their success in the IIHEM environment.
To this end, each student is assigned at the beginning of each semester an advisor chosen from the Institute staff or faculty. Advisors help in student orientation and provide counsel and assistance to students so that they may:
  • become familiar with their academic curriculum,
  • understand the operational rules and regulations related to the Institute academic system (work methodology, preparing for classes, homework and examinations, etc.),
  • understand the academic evaluation and grading system,
  • plan their curriculum,
  • satisfy in due time the acceptance requirements for the majors and all the requirements necessary to obtain the degree,
  • obtain the necessary information on the resources, activities and services that are available to students (such as tutoring, etc.).
Students have access to their advisors either through scheduled office hours set by the Center or by special individual appointment. Advisors will also contact their advisees for meetings if they feel that a specific academic problem, such as poor academic performance or repeated class absence, needs to be addressed.

The IIHEM School of Engineering prepares students for engineering careers through intensive five-year programs designed to develop fundamental engineering analysis skills, design know-how and engineering development and application expertise using the latest management, computational and technological methods. These fundamental skills are complemented by in-depth study of the economic, social, legal and environmental issues that need to be addressed as part of any significant engineering endeavor. Engineering graduates are able to choose either to immediately begin a professional career, or to pursue further graduate studies in a doctoral program.
The Center arranges tutoring services for those students who are having academic difficulties in certain courses. Tutoring allows these students to receive individual attention so as to better prepare and execute their work and to give them the confidence and motivation necessary for their success. Tutoring will involve:
  • clarifying course contents,
  • developing the understanding of concepts, principles and basic techniques of the subject matter at hand
  • going through practical exercises,
  • encouraging autonomy and initiative.
At the beginning of each semester, the Institute lists the courses in which tutoring will be available, the names of the tutors and the schedule for the tutoring hours. Tutoring always takes place in small groups so that the individual needs of each student are addressed.

Students may request, from the beginning of each semester, tutoring assistance in one or more courses. Students whose performance in previous semesters indicates that they will need tutoring assistance for certain courses are systematically requested to sign up for tutoring for those courses.
